Humanity Prevails

“The time will pass anyway; we might just as well put that passing time to the best possible use.” ~ Earl Nightingale.

During Corona crisis starting from Mar 20 till today, we are witnessing amazing acts of humanity, affection, love where people are helping others. There have been stories where a barber in Madurai used his saving of Rs.5 Lac to provide food to needy people, then there were stories of people using their saving to get buses arranged for migratory workers, celebrities like Sonu Sood showing the world what "hero" means. Stories of Gurudwaras distributing food to the migrant workers, individuals and NGOs distributing food packets, grocery items to the people on streets. There were instances where communities of one religion open their doors and hearts for people of other religion reinstating the fact of Vasudhaiva kutumbakam.

Our country witnessed a very painful situation where people migrated from their work locations to their native place due to shortage of work and resources. Large number of these people even took extreme steps of walking thousand miles to reach their places. There were horrible visuals of pregnant ladies and small kids walking without proper food, water. At number of places, government and social organizations were able to provide temporary relief to these people and they did stay back hoping that things will improve but this pandemic does not have expiry date. One thing which is ironical here is that on one hand the people were helping others on streets and on the other hand the house owners were not relaxing rent for daily wagers, laborers and this was the main reason that lot of people left their native places. There were stories contradicting to this where owners did provide relief to tenants. A person I know have not asked rent from tenants for 3 shops since last 5 months whereas some social organization must vacate their working premises because owners did not cooperate. Hence every coin has two sides but mostly this pandemic has taught people to help others.

In this situation of crisis, one entity that has played a pivotal role is Non-government organizations (NGOs). They have ensured that government infrastructure does not fall short in providing relief to the people and helped the government authorities to reach to remote areas. They have been involved in distributing food packets, mask creation and distribution, hunger management, transport management, shelter management and even maintaining helplines.

The question is what motivates us to offer help in situation of crisis. According to me, this is unspoken connection between human beings. We cannot see a living being suffering for no reasons and this feeling goes multi fold when the crisis is universal like Covid 19. The world has witnessed many stories of humanity in the past and this time will also be remembered as one of them.

This pandemic is huge, probably one of the deadliest the world ever faced but it cannot take away the everlasting urge of humans to be alive. This will to live forever will help us overcome this crisis and again start a new normal life which will be different than earlier but more secure and safe. We must just let the time pass by managing our daily routine and if possible, helping somebody live a normal life. Please do not refrain helping anyone anywhere in the country as we live in a connected world. A Delhite can help a Mumbaikar and vice versa with the help of social media. This pandemic has taught people to live with limited resources, curb their expenditure, eat less, learn more and hence we may more resources to help others. If our people are there, we can again build the economy, but this is the time when we should listen to others, understand their problem and try to help to the best of our capabilities.

Humanity has always prevailed in the past and it will prevail today and forever.

Please do comment an incidence of humanity witnessed during this tough time.

  1. Well said, but very few people can think in this direction of helping others and involve them in such kind of social work. As on the otherhand because of this pandemic time, many of them get enough time to skill themself more & more,so they hardly give a thought in this way and says ( mujhe kya karna hain, duniya se bhaiya hum safe h aur sab facilities h bas vo bahut h hamare liye).

I Am Privileged

"I am disgusted", Rohan screams in the room on a Friday evening. Fellow room-mate comes running in the room and saw Rohan frustrated and talking on phone. He waited for the conversation to get over and then gently asked Rohan, "brother, what is the problem? Why are you so upset?". It was like Rohan's roommate re-ignited the fire which was about to shut down and then it burnt the whole night. Rohan was upset on his annual appraisal which was not as expected. The whole night was spent drinking an expensive whisky.  Mira, a 25 year old girl is upset as most of her friends are getting settled in foreign countries and she is still in India. She has stopped visiting Facebook as it was demotivating for her to see all her friends getting married or visiting Europe. Most of the weekends, she spent time on her iphone x or shopping online.  Arjun was smoking the third cigarette because he realized that one of his college mate is earning more than him whereas he was be

Inspiration From A Luna Driver

It was a cold shivering morning of 18 th  Jan 22 in the northern Indian city of western Uttar Pradesh Meerut. Weather was very harsh and covid cases were surging in all parts of India. Most of the tech people like me were working from home and were comfortably placed inside 4 walls of their warm rooms. The sun was playing hide and seek and getting the clothes soaked in Sun was one of the most critical tasks. The cold weather was making everybody reluctant to travel by two-wheelers and car was the most appropriate mode of transport. If somebody asks me to go and bring some stuff from the market, the person seems to be the cruelest person on earth. But my better half asked me to bring some stuff from the market and I decided to take the best mode of transport, which is also energy saving, I decided to walk to the shop. In between, I saw a person on an old model Luna carrying a lot of items loaded all over his vehicle. He had so many items on the vehicle that I could only see his face cle

Dignity In Giving

If I help somebody, should I consider this an obligation, a favor, or a responsibility? One day, I went to a processing center of an NGO which collects and utilizes old clothes and turn them into useful products. It was a great initiative but there was always a sense of discomfort among the employees of the processing center because of the kind of stuff donated by people. There were torn-out clothes, underwear with stains, totally useless electronic equipment, utensils in the worst condition, etc. They told me that this is the daily site at the processing center because people do not think twice before putting any object in donation boxes. When we plan any gift for our loved ones, we ensure that it is worthy, neat, and nicely gift-wrapped. It makes us feel good that the receiver will enjoy the gift and cherish the relationship forever. Why do we not feel the same level of compassion for the beneficiaries to whom we are donating something? In Mahabharat, Karna supported Kauravas but
