It was a cold shivering morning of 18th Jan 22 in the
northern Indian city of western Uttar Pradesh Meerut. Weather was very harsh
and covid cases were surging in all parts of India. Most of the tech people
like me were working from home and were comfortably placed inside 4 walls of
their warm rooms. The sun was playing hide and seek and getting the clothes
soaked in Sun was one of the most critical tasks. The cold weather was making
everybody reluctant to travel by two-wheelers and car was the most appropriate
mode of transport. If somebody asks me to go and bring some stuff from the
market, the person seems to be the cruelest person on earth. But my better half
asked me to bring some stuff from the market and I decided to take the best
mode of transport, which is also energy saving, I decided to walk to the shop.
In between, I saw a person on an old model Luna carrying a lot of items loaded
all over his vehicle. He had so many items on the vehicle that I could only see
his face clearly and all other body parts were hidden behind items. He seemed to
be a small distributor of groceries items as I could see him stop at the nearby
grocery shop. I stopped by and saw him dealing with the grocery shopkeeper and
it was confirmed that he will be visiting several such shops to sell the items
loaded on his Luna.
This is a normal view of a wholesale distributor going to different
retail shops and selling items or taking orders for future delivery. But what
was unique was that this man had only one hand. He was riding the Luna from his
only hand. I could see that his left hand was entirely missing as I could see
the shirt’s sleeve floating in the air. This man was riding the vehicle,
managing items on the vehicle, stopping by at shops, selling the items,
starting all over again to visit another shop, and all this by one hand. Luna
is not a vehicle with a self-start option, it is an old vehicle with a kick
start, and you can imagine how he was able to start it with items on it. He
left with a smile on his face.
It was only a few mins of observation, but he inspired me for life. He
inspired me to never give up, to never let the circumstances take your control,
to always live with dignity as you can see a lot of such people take up
begging, to never let people sympathize with you. It was very cold, but
procrastination is not in the dictionary of such people. Their work becomes
their motivation to live with their heads high and they enjoy being
self-reliant. I still feel that I would have asked him about using an
artificial limb that could help him in some way, but some situations make you
silent. Hope I see him again so that I can talk. I can even inquire at the
retail shop to help him, but I felt that sometimes it is good to let go to
preserve the dignity of this hard-working Luna driver.

ReplyDeleteIf you would ask me I would have loved to share a video , because I did make a debut video of a small ant in my yard, one day while I was walking my dog . The season was that of falls , beautiful to be outdoors and a very busy season for those who hibernate in winters. There were lot of dead leaves and I suddenly saw some movement within those dead fallen leaves, AN ANT !!! Trying to drag ONE grain of leaf, One !!!! It seemed like a ton of sack on her back. RELENTLESSLY she continued to her goal tumbling over the mulch, small rocks (for us pebbles) , valleys (for us maybe a heap of debris) . I was astonished by her conviction , hard work so I followed her with my camera only to see she where she leads me. Finally her goal was to reach to an ant hill nearby and SHE made it ! And since then I keep my head low , with a laser focus to my goal and never stopped working hard with full conviction. She taught me focus , she taught me conviction and she showed me no matter how small you are , if you are upto it there is no stopping you to reach your goal . The true guru !
