The Invisible

Sridhar while surveying the community for a hygiene program asks Ramesh, a local fruit seller, “kya bolte ho nayi Sarkar ke baare mein” (what is your view on the new government?) Ramesh laughs and answers “sir, hamari kise padi hain” (sir who bother about us). On another day, Iqbal, a daily wager is hardly bothered who is representing his constituency. The only thing that bothers him is to ensure two meals per day for his family.  Ramesh and Husain both represents the “ invisible ” section of the society. These people are rarely talked about, hardly discussed on media channels, does not play any role in designing government strategies and are mostly non-taxpayer. They are meant to provide support services to the visible section and ensure smooth running of the civilized society. Some of the people forming this invisible section are maids, sewage cleaner, fruit/vegetable sellers on street, daily wagers like masons, painters, rickshaw pullers, car cleaners, local plumber, c...

Reach Of DTH: An Inspiring Story

Anita devi, a 60-year-old lady working as maid faced the worst situation when her only son died of tuberculosis. He did not receive the required treatment as they were not aware of government’s Ayushman scheme. We hear lot of government schemes but somehow implementation is not as accurate as it should be, and as a result these initiatives does not reach to wider and deserving people. A lot of times government declares a useful scheme but few months later the targeted beneficiaries are still waiting for someone to reach them with the process. How a scheme can be implemented in every home of the rural or urban slum? The government bodies should learn it from DTH (Direct to home) providers. The reason is that on visiting any rural or urban slum in our country, one similarity is the availability of Dish antennas on most of the slum houses. These DTH providers can “reach” every home with a purpose and their implementation is successful most of the times. In communities where there i...

Lift To A Police Officer

This was a normal day till I met someone on my way back to home. At 7 PM evening, I packed my bag and left for home. It was a long day in office like most of the days in the life of software engineer, but something positive was waiting for me on that day. I ride back to home on my two-wheeler as my home is just 5 km from office. I saw one person asking for lift near the sector 22 market and most of the people were ignoring him. I stopped by and he asked me if I can drop him to Rezang La Square where he was supposed to meet his colleagues. I agreed and we started off the journey. He was a middle-aged policeman working with Gurgaon police since last 20 years. He asked me "why did you stop and give lift to me". At first instance, the question sound weird to me but then I remember number of instances where people take lift and then loot the rider. So, I told him that "you are in police uniform, so I trust you". These words shocked him as he told me that bec...

I Am Privileged

"I am disgusted", Rohan screams in the room on a Friday evening. Fellow room-mate comes running in the room and saw Rohan frustrated and talking on phone. He waited for the conversation to get over and then gently asked Rohan, "brother, what is the problem? Why are you so upset?". It was like Rohan's roommate re-ignited the fire which was about to shut down and then it burnt the whole night. Rohan was upset on his annual appraisal which was not as expected. The whole night was spent drinking an expensive whisky.  Mira, a 25 year old girl is upset as most of her friends are getting settled in foreign countries and she is still in India. She has stopped visiting Facebook as it was demotivating for her to see all her friends getting married or visiting Europe. Most of the weekends, she spent time on her iphone x or shopping online.  Arjun was smoking the third cigarette because he realized that one of his college mate is earning more than him whereas he was be...

The Red Roses

It was a sunny day and Chitra was on her way to office. Like every day, she reached Noida City Center metro station to go to her office in Gurgaon. She heard someone calling from behind, and she looks back to see a 9-10 years old girl running towards her with something in her hand.“didiji yehlo aapka rose (sister, here is your rose)”, she said to Chitra. Chitra smiled and took the red rose and gave Rs.10/- to Munni. Chitra knew Munni ( a girl who sells  “red roses”  at the metro station) as she used to buy one red rose from her just to make her smile and slowly it became a part of both the lives.  Munni used to be among half-dozens of girls who sell roses at metro station and other areas of public gathering. Nobody knows about Munni’s family and nobody has ever asked her about the same . Whenever Chitra used to ask munni about her family, she always ran away from there without saying a word . Munni used to request passengers of age in mid 20s to buy roses at Rs.10/- ea...

The Saturday Curse

It was a Saturday afternoon and Poonam & Amit were on the way to their hometown Meerut and were about to board bus from Vaishali metro station, Ghaziabad. Suddenly, one child of age nearly 10 years came to them in worn out clothes, carrying a small bucket and small portrait of Lord Shani dipped in mustard oil. Both of them were aware of the purpose as they have been witnessing this since birth. Amit was reluctant to give any money to the kid, but Poonam mentioned that "aisa nahin karte, yeh shani daan hain. Agar thode paise shani bhagwan ke name pe de doge to kya ho jayega, isse punya milta hain" (please don't deny this charity as this is for Lord Shani, rather it will bring good blessings for us). Eventually, Amit agreed and dropped Rs.1 coin in the bucket. On the way to board the bus, Amit saw more than 10 such buckets kept on the stairs of the metro station. Each bucket belonged to a different child but may be belonging to the same contractor.  In our countr...
